Berkeley Heights has joined cities throughout the state in celebrating NJ Local Government Week April 17-21.
Because local government is the government closest to most citizens, and the one with the most direct daily impact upon its residents, it is important that residents understand how their local government operates, the services it provides, and the importance of their active involvement.
“NJ Local Government Week is an opportunity to help our residents become more informed about the many services we provide, which will lead to more knowledgeable citizen participation in the future,” said Mayor Angie Devanney. “We always strive to increase transparency and communication for our residents. We are excited to spotlight our various departments and services and hope our community find them informative and engaging.”
Throughout the week, Township Administrator Liza Viana will give residents a virtual “tour” via video of the various departments that make up our local government, talking to department heads and other employees who keep our operations running. The videos will be published on TAPinto Berkeley Heights, as well on the following Township social media channels: Facebook (@BerkeleyHeightsTwpNJ), Instagram (@BerkeleyHeightsgov), Twitter (@BHnjGov) and YouTube. Residents will hear first-hand what each department is in charge of, and get to know your municipal staff.
In addition, the Township will post pictures of our staff and daily activities of our various departments – our Department of Public Works and Waste Water Treatment employees, in particular – so residents can gain further insight into just what our workers do for our town each and every day.
“We are so fortunate to have here in Berkeley Heights what I call ‘the A-Team,’” said Administrator Liza Viana. “Many of our employees are not only dedicated and go above and beyond because they are the best, but because they live here, as well. They have a built-in sense of obligation and loyalty to our town that you simply don’t see everywhere. This is what makes our ‘A Team’ so special. I can’t wait to give residents a bigger glimpse into what we do here at Town Hall and beyond every day for our community.”
NJ Local Government Week, sponsored by the NJ League of Municipalities, is a week-long celebration that raises awareness about the importance of municipal government and its daily impact on residents. And if you know/see a municipal employee around town next week, please thank them for what they do for our town!
